Of course I did experienced the Great Kanto Earthquake, however my mother and my mother-in-law did.
And, the Great Kanto Earthquake is one of season words in Haiku world, but it is used as "SHINSAI K". SHINSAI means earthquake and K means a memorial day for someone's death, or something sad.
SHINSAI-ki is used as a season word in autumn so far, but in few years it will be also used as a season word in spring, because we had HIGASHI KANTOU Earthquake.

The article says the earthquake was in 1923 so that means it was 94 years ago...long before your mothers were born. Their memories might be from others talking about it (their parents) or what they learned in school.
Can you share why your mother in law lived in China and for how long? I'm sure she has an interesting story. Jan

As I mentioned, e earthquake occurred before our mothers were born. Though probably they heard a lot of story from adults or at school, and probably Akari will to the same thing but she will hear about Higashi Kantou Daishinsai which her parents and grandparents( it means us) experienced.
About Mansyu in China, well, I tried to tell more to you, so I asked Yuki. and he said "she didn't live in Mansyu, she lived in KEIJYOU(in Korea).
Anyway we(or only I) have not enough information or correct information about the modern Japanese history. Because we(Japanese young people? or I) didn't (or even now), so don't) learn the modern history of these 100 years enough.
Anyway she lived in KEIJOU when Korea used to be under control of Japan. And at that time Japanese people who used to live were politicians, officers and rich businessmen. So her father seemed to have been a businessman (according to Yuki, but he doesn't know very well.) And She sometimes tell her life in Korea. She mentioned "the culture of the continent" compared with Japanese culture. She says she felt that Japanese culture seemed to be with "cooped-up feeling". These days I think why she chose to live in this nursery home and gets along with them is from this character which was learnt in the period who lived in the continent.
