In the middle of OBON vacation

Yesterday's duo made with success without "quarreling". In spite of OBON two couples were there, and the family of the owner of KARAKU was there. So we really enjoyed playing, and the audience seemed to enjoy too. When we played YAGIFUSGI (Japanese old dance song) they clapped in the rhythm to the piece.

At noon my elder daughter comes back, according to the schedule I think she is on the train,,, I hope! Because we reserved our seat at a TENPURA restaurant.

She works as a assistant at the college where she graduated this spring. And as one of her business, in the afternoon we are going to a art museum in this area.

Though our younger daughter was supposed to come back tomorrow, she was asked to come to the office where she works part-time, so she doesn't come back. On Sunday we meet her. On Saturday I'll take my elder daughter to the bar where Yuki plays once a week. Actually he plays on the day. Only she hasn't seen (or listen to) him at the bar.

I've already bought for something to mothers and brothers in TOKYO.

GYOZA-pie, GOYZA is fresh food, so it's difficult to take them, but many things GOYZA-flavored are sold here. It is one of them. It is a kind of "sweets". The sign is GOYZA-pie.

Anway we have to rehearse our duo

Yuki has recovered. We have such a proverb, "Oni no kakuran", in English --- seeing a dictionary "it is like the devil getting sunstroke".
In the morning I did usual house chores. Monday is a regular trash day, so I had some garbage bags out on the decided place. Some of our neighbors seemed to go out, because the amount of garbage was less than usual.

I recommend Yuki to go to a clinic to get further medicine, but --- he is sitting at his TV (he can see golf programs anytime)

On the other hand, we changed our Obon schedule, so in the afternoon I'll go to a clinic to get "my" usual medicine.

And anyway we have to rehearse our duo for tomorrow's play at KARAKU.

Today sometimes it rains, so it is really comfortable day to spend in this house without airconditioner.
We are really spending relaxed time now, it is "ARAHI NO MAE NO SHIZUKESA" The quiet before the storm.

Sunday, August 08, 2010

I'm still here.

According to the schedule, my 'busy' Obon vacation was supposed to begin already, --but Yuki and I, only two of us are at home.
Unusual thing happened, Yuki have caught a cold with a high fever. Today he is getting better, though he has a little fever. Once every other year he catches cold.
Anyway visiting my mother is canceled.

But I can introduce the TENPURA restaurant we were supposed to go. I found this site on the web.

What would you like to eat when you have a (bad) cold.
He "wants" melons and -----'s ice cream.
Can you guess what brand ice cream does he want??

Before one-week vacation

Next week is called "OBON", Yuki has a official one-week vacation. So I organized to have no classes for the week. (I can organize my schedule.)
I told a friend, "one-week vacation makes me busy".
She said,
" That will make you busy? I see vacation as a time for relaxation and fun!"

Yes, she is right, from her thinking my sentence sounds strange.
But actually "busy".
We "have to " go to TOKYO to meet my mother to check her health condition, and take her somewhere to make her fun. We "have to " go to Tokyo again to attend Yuki's family reunion and take his mother somewhere to make her fun. Both of them are looking forward to our coming. And we have to do our daughterly and filial duty.
On the other hand, what to "our" daughters think of their "daughterly duty"???
They'll come back and stay with us for a few days ---- probably without doing chores.
They think "coming back" is their daughterly duty.

I know both of them are alike. ---Like father (or mother), like daughter.

Well, if our mothers get older, we think "we don't know when will be the last time to see her, so we do anything as possible " sincerely. But so far, sometimes we want to say this phrase "Don't talk like that to me! I've bend backward for you!" .
And when my daughters come back, I always say "to what did you come back?????"

Anyway it means my mothers and we, and my daughters are fine.

And the main thing that makes me busy is, I have to cook mostly three times a day, I'm used to live alone at day time.

But anyway going to TOKYO is fun, and staying with my daughters for a few days is fun.

I'm murmurrng at????

One of my hobbies ?? , no, routine things is looking over the newspaper every morning.
And I like to read the advice column. I always thought what good ways the advisers to deal with the problems (troubles, or unhappiness). Today's poster is murmuring about her peaceful life though she is surrounded by her boy friend, her family and her friends saying "I feel sometimes empty".

Well, Well, I always murmuring "empty". So I put my eyes on the answer, and after reading that, "Hmm, it's nothing special, but it's true, it's the life" and I realised that "even though I'm getting old, I'm still competitive person, it means I might still keep energy to do something more"
--- I hope these sentences make sense.

The adviser said
You want to be acknowledged your ability more, or you want to be more confident in yourself.
And you might regret that you have nothing proud.
In this case, you should outside more and expand your world. You might need something new, and the encounter will give you some changes.

And anyway today I did 30-minute walking. Yuki said it had nothing with the advice, but anyway it was good for you to do some physical exercise.
Against the exaggerated words, my acting patterns is too simple, isn't it?

August came

Yes, August came.
What is special to eat the first food in August??? In this area, probably grapes, and Japanese pears. Since I came here I've never bought them at the supermarkets.

And in my garden, finally "MYUGA" has shot up.

Well, these days, people seem more interested in making sure they can get whatever vegetables or fruit they want any time of the year. But at least I enjoy to eat spacial in the season.

In summer we (means, Japanese people) drink barley tea. And this summer's beverage that Yuki and i are caught is "Citrus depressa" juice, kind of lemon juice without sugar. This fruit grows in Okinawa.
Do you know it?

This week has started. Everyone not be overwhelmed by this heat, Enjoy!

Sunday, August 01, 2010

These are "the" eels.

Last night we could get eels, it was easy, because the day of 'USHI NO HI" has already gone.
Do you remember that last weekend we missed having eels?

They were delicious.

Especially "I" was really satisfied.

Some people in Japan love eels, and some people in Japan don't like eels.

I have one friend who likes ( or loves) eels like me, she lives in another prefecture.

And her husband doesn't like eels, so when we meet (probably once or twice a year) we eat eels without thinking of people who don't like eels.

Why did I eat eels often even though I love eels?

The main reason was cost performance.

When I asked to my family "which do you prefer eels or meat?"

Their answers were "meat".

Now just there are two members, Yuki has a favorite steak house, it tastes good, but for me, it's too much. It means the cost performance related with ECO, probably eels is better, though it depends on Yuki's apatite. And actually I want to eat stead, because I used to be a meat&sweets-eater.(When I was a child, I didn't like fish, vegetables, and my main was cake or cookies instead of rice.)

Yesterday's topic with high school students

Yesterday's theme was "travel". And the lesson started with the question "What's a lesser-known country that you're interested in learning more about?"
A student said "Bulgaria".
Probably the bland name of "Bulgaria Yoghurt" produced by MEIJI company made Bulgaria popular in Japan.
For me, I know one Bulgarian lady who came to study at a college in this area. 6 years already passed since she went back to Bulgaria, and unfortunately we don't keep contact each other. But I heard she published a book "Bulgarian Japanese idioms".

Well, there were some example of little-know places on the text book, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, Fiji, Argentina, Belize, Denmark, Iceland, Latvia, Togo, Brunei.
Do you know all of the names? Do you know where they are on the map?

For me, The Incan ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru is a place I'd like to visit ---- but I don't like walk, so if it is allowed, to write concisely, if I can afford a large budget for my trip, I'd like to charter a privet jet and see it from the sky.

Where do you usually hear about new and different places to travel??
One student said "on TV".
Have you ever needed to stop for the night before continuing on a journey?
They haven't . But I remembered a thing. Both of them have an experience that their school trip when they were junior high school students were canceled on the half way because of surge in patients caught by flu.

And I asked "What's more important when traveling, speed or pocket money?"
It means " Which do you prefer to go to TOKYO by bullet train or local train on your budget"
Both of them immediately said "local train, I can get up early for such a event."

Well, Yuki and I are thinking which is better to go to TOKYO on our OBON vacation (summer vacation) by car? or by local train??
Our daughters will come back, and the last day of the summer vacation four of us will go to TOKYO to attend a family reunion party. Using car is the most inexpensive, but it means Yuki doesn't drink alcohol, and, he has to be a chauffeur not only for us, but also our mothers. And probably on the day we will be caught in a heavy traffic jam on the highway.
So we think using local train is better, but for my daughters probably will say "car is easier and comfortable".

Why???

I was asked two "why"s.
1. Why do Japanese people like to travel overseas?
2. Why do so many Japanese people join a tour?

My answer with a little bit sarcasm is
1. Because every place around is "Japan", same air. When we to abroad, we can breath completely different air, and we see different ethnic groups.
(And these days the cost of a little bit far domestic trips is as much as the one of foreign travels to neighbor countries)

2. We are not used to be isolated from Japanese, and usually the language we can speak is Japanese. And the cost is much cheaper than personal trips.

Now I finished my lunch. This early morning I made curry. Yuki and I ate it for breakfast, now I ate it for my lunch, and probably I'm going to eat it for my dinner, and tomorrow we'll eat it for our breakfast again. And probably it will have gone.

She is cute!

Before starting this blog, let me show my thanks. You voted! I'm glad to make sure that some people come to see this blog. Thank you. This question of " where do you live" is being put here for a while. If you don't vote, please do it!

Well, who is "she" of the title.
A girl who started to take piano lessons here since this April. She is 7 years old. My impression of her is "white girl", opt, it is Japanese English. "a light-skinned girl". Yesterday, suddenly she changed into a brown and sun-tuned girl. According to her until the day before yesterday her "red" skin hurts because of getting sun-damaged, now she feels itchy.
Last weekend her family went to the sea. We have no sea, so they went to the next prefecture, it usually takes 3 hours by car on the weekend.

And for her it was the first time to go to the sea.

Me "How was the sea?"
She" It was salty, it wast true that the sea water was salty."
Her answer was fulled of surprise and satisfaction. What a cute girl she was!

I also asked her, "which do you prefer the sea? or pools?"
Her answer is "the sea".

My family has not been to the sea often though we love to eat fresh fish at the spot.
The reason is that my daughters used to have atopic dermatitis. When I went to a beach, as soon as my daughters stepped into the beach, their skin changed into red and they started to feel itchy. So we evacuates to a restaurant near the beach.
We went another beach, but it was the same.
When they became elementary school students, their dermatitis seemed to have gone. So we went to the sea sometimes. But I had been always afraid of their dermatitis.
So we have not often been to the sea.
Well, let me add to the conversation with the girl,

She said she played with her brother , who is much older than she, in the sea, and her mother was watching them. ( I don't know what their father was doing.)
The reason why her mother was watching is ---, "my mother doesn't have a swimming suit"
I laughed. Can you guess her mother's feeling????
Actually I also put away my old-fashioned swimming suit these days.
And for a while I won't buy a new swimming suit for a while. Because I don't like to stay on the beach under the sun shine. (Well, I keep another swimming suit for swimming in the pool though)

Cucumber&Yohgurt cold soup

Before starting today's blog, let me tell you a thing.

Did you notice that I put a question on the top of the blog. The question is "Where do you live?" Please vote by secret ballot.

Well, yesterday's pumpkin 'bread' was shared with my students. And the leftover was for our breakfast with "cucumber & Yohgurt" soup.
Did I tell you? I make yohgurt and drink yohgurt, banana, and special green vegetable powder juice almost every morning.
Today I put yohgurt, cut cucumbers, grated onion, a little bit olive oil,and salt&pepper in the mixer.
Not so bad.
Yuki said if it were more creamy, it would be better.
I agree with him. The mixer is simple(?) mixer. So the power seems not to be enough. I have to bring out the bigger mixer from the closet --- someday. Because the cold soup was not so bad.

Todays topic with high school students

Now summer vacation of students has started. So my extra lessons have also started.
Today's topic with my high school students were "pet".
1.What is the most common pet in Japan? Probably dogs and cats are the most common pets. And people having pets seemed to consider themselves to be a dog person or a cat person.
(Does this sentence make sense?)
Some people have dogs and cats both , though.
And I'm neither a dog person or a cat person, because now I don't have pets.

2.What do you think about people who abandon their pets?
In Japan we often see stray cats. Actually my pet Choro who died a few years ago used to be a stray cat. Stray cats can survive on the street, on the other hand if a dog become stray, usually a civil servant comes and take him or her somewhere and ---. I never permit to abandon pets.

That's it.
What do you think of them???
Now next lesson will start, have a nice night! This is today's pumpkin cake.

Calm everning

Yesterday Yuki was at home in the evening, and I didn't have lessons. So we went out to eat "eels". Did you know that yesterday it was "USHI-NO-HI" according to Japanese calendars,; the day of eels according to my own calendar.

I have to write the precise things.
We have the day of the ox in midsummer, and this year it was on July 26.
We have a habit to eat eels on the day to recover from fatigue because of this humid and hot summer.
(Please don't ask me more, anyway I love eels)

But it was too late. Not the time, it was just 5:30. All the eels at the restaurant were already reserved and sold out.
So we changed our minds, and went to a Sushi restaurant (not KAITEN-sushi). Yuki has been to there long time ago. But it was too expensive for all members of my family to go there together. So we used to go to KAITEN-sushi in Utsunomiya. Now we are two and we knew the restaurant was remodeled.
Yesterday it was a week day, not so crowded. We sat at the counter. (Can you guess? When we were children the people who were sitting at the counter at Sushi restaurants seemed to be stylish, real adults and old-customers.)
We had some sushi recommended by the master.

And we went back. After we parked the car in the garage instead of going into the house, we walked to a small restaurant to have some dessert and alcohol. Yuki had black beer and some vegetable snacks. I had cassis-milk and ice cream.

We went back to home at 8o'clock. After taking a "bath", we went to bed.
It was a really laid-back evening.

While I was writing this diary, I was making pumpkin (this morning I got from the neighbor) paste. I'll make pumpkin cup cakes.

Today's toastmasters

One more, I will update this blog today before I forget today's activity. Today I attened a toastmasters meeting. I made a speech in Japanese, the title was "it is difficult to use the word "Ganbatte" suitably".
I think it was done well.

Well, and, the table topics in English were also interesting. Ms.S gave us three themes.
1. What do you think of the consumption tax in Japan. Do you agree rise in it?
2. Some companies in Japan declared that they use English as the official language at work. What do you think of it?
3. Since next year English is going to take a regular subject at all elementary schools in Japan. What do you think of it?

I want to ask you who read this blog. "What do you think of it???"

1. I agree with rise in the consumption tax. Because "it can't be helped". But the proceeds from rise in the comsumption tax has to be used for the welfare field for nursing elderly . I hope the wage of nurses and helpers working at nursery centers or hospitals would also rise. --- Who will take care of "us" when Yuki and I get older???
So to be exact I agree with rise in the consumption tax on conditions that; our government should spell out the budget and have to allocate some to the welfare field.

2. I saw the articles in the newspaper. Unicro that is an apparel company, and Rakuten that is an Internet company did. On the other hand an auto maker says "it's nonsense to use English in the domestic work". Well these days the phrase of "using English" seems to be independent from the field site. Getting used to use English is necessary. But the word of "use" in this case means, to write, to read, to listen, and to speak English. And in worldwide business employees and clients can keep good relationship through simple English. But basically the way of thinking is formed by their native language. For example Japanese people often use" Ganbatte". This one word has various meanings depending on the situations. Try your best, You can do it, Work harder, Hang in there, etc. So especially in Japanese case, it is really dangerous to translate a Japanese word into an English word automatically every time.Among Japanese people they understand what they want to say in Japanese and even in English. People who doesn't get used to speak English with foreigners should be careful to use English to foreigners.

3. Well, Well, I think it cannot be helped. The official reason why English class will start at elementary school is that, at earlier age children have opportunies to hear English, better ears they have, and at elementary school children can learn English as fun not as a subject for entrance exams.
But, my reason why I agree with it, is different. I don't want to make much bigger difference between private schools and public schools or city schools and country schools. It is a human right for children to take education equivalently, isn't it? We can't stop for private schools (and some public schools in cities) to strength English education. And English is running after us until children become adults. These days to enter companies they check English ability. So children in publish school must not be left behind.

Well, Well, Yuki has come to have dinner. I have to make dinner though he bought SASHIME today.

how to cool our room

Though there is a heater in each room of our house, not air conditioner in each room of our house.
Yuki's room has not an air conditioner. It often causes a little quarrel between in summer.

Why his room has not an air conditioner?
Officially, there are two reasons.
We don't have a habit of sleeping with an air conditioner on.
We never have central air conditioner in our house, so even if each room gets cold by the air conditioner, once we go out of the room to the toilet, we should be attracted by "humid"and "hot" wind. I think the difference of the temperatures is bad for our health. So we want the wind to go through the windows open.

And other reasons are like that.
He is not at home in the hot daytime except for his one-week summer holiday.
If his room has an air conditioner, he turns on the air conditioner as soon as he enters his room when he comes back at night and starts napping holding a glass of SAKE on his hand with an air conditioner on. It is not good for his health.
And---
the electric cost will immediately get higher. (It is the main reason).
While his summer vacation, if everybody (including our daughters) is in the house, we don't have enough ampere-capacity to turn on three air conditioner on the same time.
(Well, it means, our living room and our daughters' room have air conditioners.)
(And additionally the problem of ampere-capacity just depends on our contract how we'll pay our basic electric cost)
When you read the above, you must have thought "how strict Mieko is!","how stingy Mieko is!"
These days I started to change my mind, so I confessed our circumstance about air conditioners.
On the other hand Yuki seems to change his mind. He seems to start to think that keeping his room (very)cold by the air conditioner is not good for his health. "Sweating" naturally is good for his health and to keep good condition to play golf in the hot day.

Well, Well, please let me explained more. This house "never" has central air conditioner. So even if each room gets cool by the air conditioner, once we open the door to go to toilet, humid and hot air attacks us. So we open all windows and doors for wind to go through.

Anyway we went to a home center.
Can you guess what he bought???
It is called "HIEHIE-mat", it's a cold mat that inside is cool gel. I don't know the mechanism to get us cool. According to some websites the evaporation of heat has something to do with the sheet.
Additionally I bought a small fan to put near me.

Well, well, anyway until August 10th, I hope we will have been keeping a good relation ship to do duo smoothly at Karaku.

how to memorize English words

Yesterday night two high school students came to take my lesson. They are "really" funny.
First we try to study new English words.
I'll tell you a part of our conversation yesterday.

Mieko:This word of "publish" means HAKKOU-SURU (in Japanese, I explained); to produce a book, magazine ,etc. and sell it to the public.
Aiko; HAKKOU? I thought the books get rotten (she said in Japanese. In Japanese the word of HAKKOU has some versions of KANJI)
Mieko; That means to ferment. For example Natto is fermented soy beans, isn't it?
Haruka, The sound of "publish" is similar to "FEBREZE".
Mieko; You think so? Really??? It is ..... according to a website, it is a compound word of "fabric" and "breeze, but the spieling is "febreze".

Aiko; Hakkou has another meaning, growing light???

Mieko; it is to emit light. Do you know the word of "LED"? It is a shorten word of light emitting diode.

And the topics of yesterday was about food.

1. Do you think food has become safer or more dangerous in the last ten years?

Haruka says.

"I think it has become safer, because these days people really care about something synthetic, such as synthetic colorings, synthetic seasonings, we prefer to organic foods.

Aiko says

"I think it has become more dangerous, because our diet tend to be Western style, so we have more oil, fat, sugar .

What do you think of this question???
And other question is "How often do you eat dessert?"
Both of their answer were "every day".

Well, Well, I try not to take much juice, or sweets. And this hot weather seems to help cucumber s growing quickly. Almost every day I got some fresh cucumbers from my neighbors. Usually I give some of them to my students because my dining is usually alone except breakfast, so for me too many! So I pickled cucumbers for my dessert. I pickled them into "SYOUCHU"(kind of alcohol" & sugar (refrained sugar) instead of vinegar.

Hot, Hot, Hot, & of course, Humid

Thought it is not announced that the rainy season is finished, it is actual Japanese summer for these three days. These three days we have consecutive days off. Some of my friends who have "still" kids, went to the sea. (Well, I don't remember when Yuki took us to the sea....)

These two nights we had a guest. Now she lives in KYOTO, but in late of July she's going to go back to America, yes, she is an American, and she is an American literature professor. Well, well, Yuki and I are not unfamiliar with American literature (not only with American literature but also Japanese literature.) Her expertise is Hemingway.

According to Yuki's common sense, when he hears Hemingway, the next topic is the song of "I'm sailing". Do you know this song sung by Rod Stewart? Unfortunately she didn't know that. I don't know whether the song has something with Hemingway. But on the web Rod Stewart seemed to love Hemingway. Is it right???
Well we asked her what record , no, "CD" was the first one she bought. It was "thriller".
This time I prepared "special" watermelon juice. Have you ever tasted watermelon juice?
Yuki tasted one in China.

In advance I made sugar water with mint & lemon and cold it in the fridge. And when everybody sat at the table, I mixed cuts of watermelons and special cold sugar water in a blender.
Yes, it was nice. But--- despite my efforts, to mix just watermelon & cold water in a blender was enough to make tasty watermelon juice. Watermelons are really sweet in this season. There is nothing better than the seasonable natural taste.
This weekend I'm going to attend a Toast Master meeting. This time I have to talk about something in Japanese. Now I'm thinking what topic will make the members fun.

Hanjyuku-Kasutera

What is Hanjyuku-Kasutera? it is recently popular as one of sweets that we buy at Tokyo station.
Yesterday Yuki bought it for me. Hanjyuku means half-boiled eggs, and Kasutera is a kind of sponge cake and it came from Portugal. He brought it with a special cooler bag that cost 300 yen. Well, everything that is sold at Tokyo station seems to be expensive and stylish.

Well the inside is,--- can you see?
The top of it is like really soft custard sauce, so it has the adjective of Hanjyuku. and the rest of it is, yes, actually kasutera. And the taste is similar to baked cheese cake.

From today, some mothers of my students come to talk with me in turn. It is the week of parent-teacher conference. Who is a teacher? Of course it's me. Though I'm a teacher of this small English school, from some mothers I seem to be a senior mother.
Yes, it's true. While being noticed by myself I'm much older than mothers of my students.

Well, well, I bought one gadget. Can you guise what is for?

Elderly Couple of 62 Years plays piano

An elderly couple walked into the lobby of the Mayo Clinic for a checkup and spotted a piano. They've been married for 62 years and he'll be 90 this year.

Sunday, July 11, 2010

These are called "baby tomatoes".

Today, it's not hot, but humid, and cloudy. Sometimes it drizzles down. Yes, it is still in the rainy season. Though today it is Sunday, but I can't air out the FUTON. And "unfortunately" I skipped wedding because of drizzling.

Well, have you ever heard or seen "baby tomatoes"?

Cherry tomatoes that we call "puchi tomatoes" are common. (Puchi means petit in Franch/) And they "were " really popular for kids to be an easy cultivable vegetable. At many kindergartens or nursery schools (in this area) kids "were" growing them.

Why I wrote the sentences in the past tense is that, actually a few years ago, at a nursery school a sad accident happened. A kid swallowed a puchi tomato by mistaken, and stack it into her throat. And unfortunately she ---/

Since then cultivating puchi tomatoes is avoided in public kindergartens and nursery schools (in this area).(I heard it from my friend.)

And instead of them this new "baby tomatoes" appeared.

If kids swallow baby tomatoes, the smaller tomatoes seem to go through into their throat.

And for me, it is trouble some to chew them. To eat these tomatoes, it is easier to swallow them.

And --- chewing forth is getting lower.

Now I'm home

Hot, Hot, Hot & Humid!

Now I'm home. I've just come back from a meeting at the office of the company that I belong to.
In one hour a junior high school student "is coming" to take a small test again because she didn't get enough score last night.

This week, probably I had spent every day as usual, it means I could do all classes and all chores without skipping and "forgetting".

This hotness makes my brain freeze.
Who is such a crazy man? Who on earth is playing golf & tennis?

Today actually it is really hot, but we didn't hear the announce that "rainy season is finished."

Actually last Tuesday and Thursday they were cloudy, and sometimes drizzling.

On the other hand yesterday's rain was actually summer rain, just when junior high school student were on the way from school, it was raining cats and dogs.

Well, Well, I'll tell you a thing.

The other day I sent some "fresh" corn that I got at a farmer's shop nearby to my daughters and my mother. They seemed to enjoy the corn.

How do you usually cook corn?
We usually boil them to eat.
Yes, boiling is not so troublesome. But these days many people use microwave oven instead of boiling with a pot, because it is easier. My mother also has the microwave oven, but she doesn't like to use it.
So she boiled them as usual way, with a big pot.

But the farmer recommended "cooked corn by the microwave oven has better taste than boiled corn with a big pot", so I put a note in the box with the corn. She didn't believe it.
My mother, she is a really good person, but she is "stubborn" to her style. It can't be helped.

To tell the truth, I didn't compare the taste yet. It's troublesome for me to prepare a big pot, so I cooked them with the microwave oven, and I knew the taste was good.

Eco point

Now a series of chores is almost finished.
What is "a series chores"?

It started with put double windows (or inside windows) that are called "plu-mahdo" in Japanese, in the kitchen. As you know I'm really sensitive to the coldness. So we decided to put them.
A couple of worker came to put them. On the same time they repaired our entrance door.
The windows seem to be a one way to contribute to the eco-system.
So we could get eco-points.

And the next step began.

The workman said "To use the eco-points most effectively is repairing the house."
So we decided to change the floor sheet of the kitchen.
While we were checking the floor sheet, we found the floor sheet of the bathroom was also too old. So we asked the workmen to change the floor sheet of kitchen, and bathroom.
But, it was not so easy.
Of course to change the sheet, we had to remove all stuff in these rooms temporary, it was a really tough job, and to put t
hem back was also tough job.

But it cannot be helped.
What I wanted to say was, another problem was found. A part of the floor of the bathroom rotted. So a carpenter came to repair it.
And on the same time pipes under the sink had a leak a little because of their deterioration of 25 years old. So another workman came to repair it.
Additionally, a catch basin out of kitchen had also a leak. So we had to get it repaired.
To have somewhere repaired, I had to throw something away, clean something, and organize the spaces.
Now a series of these chores are almost finished.
Today the workman who came to my house to get the estimate before these constructions, came again to confirm the constructions, and to take the procedure of eco-point application.
This house is getting old as we are, some repairing seemed to be necessary.

Do you know "Rock, Scissors, Paper"?

Today's question is "do you know Rock-Scissors-Paper?"
Probably many people say "yes".

And I know in France they do Rock-Scissors-Leaf( instead of Paper)-Well. Because Lea told me.
(Lea, can you see it? I hope you could reach my blog.)

But, it is the first question, what do you call kind of this game?
In Japan we call it Janken.

And I found this Janken site.

To tell the truth, before I found this site, I had thought that in the U.S.A they didn't have Janken." Because some of my "adult" guests who came to stay with us said "what were you doing?" when my daughters did that.

And from them I was heard that they usually use a coin to decide who goes first saying "heads or tails".
Well, it is the next question.
Please tell me more specifically the rule of the way of even or odd.
My understanding is like that.
There are five members.
Everyone indicates a number using their shingle hand saying even (or odd).
And they count the total number.
If it is an odd number, the people who indicate numbers of odd (1, 3, 5) are winner.

Well, if my understanding is right, I'll ask another question.
How do you indicate "zero".
If you use only one hand, odd numbers are 1,3,5. So even numbers has to exist as much as the numbers of odd numbers. probably 2, 4, and 0

annual pickled RAKKYO has come

Right now, I received a parcel, it is a bin of pickled Rakkyo that my friend made.
To tell the truth, I don't like pickled Rakkyo, but I "love" hers. I can eat only hers. Rakkyo is Japanese shallot, but they seem not to be in the same group.
Thanks Micchan.

my speech at Toast Masters

Yesterday I participated a club meeting of Toast masters, and made a speech for the first months after a few months. I'll show the contents.

Today’s title is about English people.
I found an interesting book, the title is "How to be Alien". The author is George Mikes who was born in Hungary. When he moved to stay in England, he knew in England everything was different from other European countries, and he understood he was an alien in England. He writes what English people are like in this book.
Well, I learned a thing from an English man, people say “England”, they sometimes mean “Great Britain”, sometimes “the United Kingdom”, or sometimes “British Isles”. I’m sorry, this time I’ll use just England or English without thinking of the difference.

Let me start my speech.
To live in England without troubles, you should understand some important rules.

First “Speak slowly and quietly”
In England they learn to speak slowly and quietly, in Europe important people speak loudly and clearly. And in England only stupid people try to show they’re clever
It’s interesting, isn’t it?
Thinking of Japanese people, some people say speaking loudly is not sophisticated.
And usually we don’t show our cleverness. “He who knows most speaks least” is one of Japanese proverbs.

Next, “Pleased meet you” is a necessary greeting sentence.
English people won’t shake hands if you put your hand out, they smile and wait. When you stop trying to shake hands, they try to shake your hand and say “Pleased to meet you”, in Japan we usually bow instead of shaking hands.

The third is “nice” is the most useful adjective.
The author says, for the first three years you do not need to learn or use any other adjectives, just “nice” is necessary, you can say that the weather is nice, a restaurant is nice, Mr. So-and-so is nice, Mrs. So-and-so’s clothes are nice, you had a nice time. And all this will be very nice.
In Japan probably two phrases are at least necessary, they are not adjectives though. Sumimasen and Arigato. And if you are an office worker, you should learn one more phrase, Otsukaresama. And if you are a teacher, you should learn “Ganbatte”

The forth is “The English hide their feelings by speaking very little.”
If a man really loves a woman, he just says “I really quite like you, in fact”. He doesn’t say anymore.
It might be similar to old-type Japanese men.”Follow me without grumbling” is an old phrase when to propose marriage.

He also tells the easiest way to show that you speak good English.
It is to finish all your sentences with the question tug “isn’t it? “

In this book the author mentioned about tea. England tea is very famous. He said “Tea was once a good drink with lemon and sugar. It tastes very pleasant. But then the British decided to put cold milk and no sugar. They made it colorless and tasteless; tea became an unpleasant drink, even though it is called tea...
Well, I love milk tea, though.

There are more rules, if you are interested in them, please read the book of "how to be ailen".
According to this book, English people seem not to deny directly. Thinking of Japanese people, you probably know this phrase, “Japanese people can’t say no” .This phrase is said to show the Japanese character. Additionally another popular phrase is “American people can’t say sorry”.
Toaster masters club started in America, and now in many countries the club meetings are held. Every club in every country or even in every city has their own style. But in any speaking styles, like they speak clearly, or vulgarly, loudly or quietly., we can understand each other through oral communication. And if we know there are various styles of speaking, we will be able to accept and understand each other more easily.
We’ll build an amicable relationship with other people, instead of exclusive one to aliens.
Thank you for your listening to my speech.

The end

P.S I could organize this speech thanks of supporting by Tim. Thanks.

Angel visit

We live in the city, but fortunately we have trees. And my neighbour, they have some birds. So we hear birds singing. But yesterday I heard a bird singing(or yelling) loudly. It's unusual.
Yes, a bird was in my house. It came from a window in the bathroom. It was calling to help to (probably) its parents. Actually outside some birds were flying with twittering or crying.
To tell the truth I'm not good at treating animals. But I have to do something. So I put a big water bowl on it, scooped it up, and let it out from the window.
It was not injured, so it and its family flied up in the sky.If it had been injured, -----
Do you remember? Once we had a cat, which name was CHORO.
When she came to my house, she was a stray cat because she had a color, and she seemed to really starve. So we decided to have her as our pet.

Well, now most plants (mainly herbs) of our small gardeing have flowers motestly.

Rainy season has started

According to the weather report rainy season has started. Probably it's right. Last Sunday it is humid and cloud, the day before yesterday, it was raining. Yesterday it was sunny and humid. And today until 10 o'clock, it was raining, now it is sunny.

I don't have drying machine, so this morning I didn't washing. But suddenly the sun came out, so I did washing quickly, and dried them out. In one hour my classes will start. So I already take them in the room, and now, I turned on air conditioner in the class room to dehumidify.

Well, Well, do you know rusk? In America it seems to be called Melba toast. We often see at bakeries, it makes sense, because usually rusk is made from bread which gets dry or hard. Of course at bakeries, they seem use broken bread or excessive amount bread.

To tell the truth, I don't like bread rusk very much.

But these days my friend baked butter cake rusk, and she said "it was delicious". (Unfortunately I couldn't taste it, she lives in another prefecture.)

And instead of it (it happens coincidentally), I got rusk of puff shells.

"It is delicious."
Opt. it starts raining again. I have to close the windows.

Garden 2

Now actually we have May weather.
Not so hot, not so cold, it is good for me. And of course we have sudden thunder
To tell more concretely, suddenly on a fine day, it gets dark with clouds and we hear thunder with heavy rain ( the day before yesterday, we had hail), and after a few minutes it gets sunny again.
Thunder and lightning is one of characterising things in TOCHIGI. So some people who are not born in TOCHIGI says "Why people in TOCHIGI are not afraid of thunder and lightning".

I have one rose tree, and it started blooming. And Chinese rampions also started blooming.
Today, Lea comes to eat dinner with us. It will be the last day we(Yuki and I) see her. She will return to France on Friday. She came "here" last September. It is true time flies like arrows.

The day before yesterday one man came to eat dinner with us. Do you remember the blog about Mexican cooking lesson. Last winter? we took his Mexican cooking lesson. At that time we made tacos, but they were not so"hot" for Yuki, so I want to let them to eat "hot" tacos. But -- I failed. the tacos or salsa source I made was not enough hot for them. Anyway they enjoyed tacos with pepper sauce and jalapeno sauce.

Well, well, probably for a while we will not have any guests. Both of us , for a while "dedicate" to each jobs. I have to attend "business"meetings on some weekend, and Yuki is going to go to China on business.

Thanks of Jan, new habit added to "my" way to enjoy eating. I usually don't drink alcohol. But "a little" vodka with much cranberry juice is good. Now the expensive vodka has already gone, and instead of it usual vodka bottle and expensive SHISO juice bottle are on the table.

Garden

In these days my small garden is getting full of greens.
The flowers of sage has started to open. Around the pot mints are growing. So I enjoy mint & sage herb tea.

And "one day lily" (the Japanese name is KISUGE" ) opens. unfortunately it will fade at night. Anyway when I see the blooming, I know rainy season is just around the corner.

And now "MITUSBA" is now in the season in my garden. It is eatable. It seems to be Japanese vegetable, and is a group of parsley. I pick some of them, and "flash-cook" them.
But the way of my flash-cooking, is just put it into the pan and put the lid for a few seconds.

Strawberry Jam

Now in this area, for farmers their strawberry harvest season is finished. They dig out all strawberry plants and start growing new seedlings.

So, sometimes I get lots of good strawberries from my friends free. To tell the truth, I got last week, and made jam. And yesterday I also got baskets of strawberries. So I'm making jam again.
Lea, can you hear me??? I hope you see this blog. ( I know you could reach this blog in these days.)
Yesterday, she drooped into my house. She is going back to France in two weeks. I know her Japanese is being really improved. But now she is standing in front of big hole, or, wall.
Everybody except Yuki and I praise her for her Japanese. It is right. But like my English, it's not so good. Everybody praise her, so she assumes that her Japanese makes sense. Unfortunately, try to talk with her more, it is getting hard to understand what she wants to say.
Learning Japanese from conversation has its limits. Reading and writing are necessary.
Halfhearted Japanese sometimes causes misunderstanding and troubles.
Lea, you had a good chance to know " practical & casual" Japanese, so when you come back to France, you should start to learn "clear (or formal)" Japanese.
I know you have good ears, so reading and writing make your Japanese perfect.
Well, Well, --- on the other hand, while 10 days with Jan, my English was --- really bad. Sorry Jan. To tell the truth, I gave up to thinking something in English. I know not only Lea, I have to study English more, especially in my case to train my ears.

It's cold!!

During Jan's staying it was like summer, now it is like early spring. It is necessary for me to turn on the heater.

Yesterday a couple of carpenters came and attached another windows in the kitchen and bathroom. And they changed another windows in the kitchen into double windows.
In my family "I" was only sensitive person about the coldness in this area. But these days Yuki also said "it's cold, isn't it". I don't know why, one reason is both of them getting old , on the other hand the earth seems to get warm. Another reasons is now only there are two members in our house, so we don't have enough energy to keep the room warm. Actually sometimes I use the kitchen as a lesson room. At that time, only one heater is enough. But after they disappear, I turn on another heater.
-- Well, of course I mentioned our winter season.
And precaution is necessary, we think. So we decided to attach another Windows.
I don't know whether they work well or not until next winter comes.
Well, today "I" ironed 5 Yuki's Y-shirts. This week Yuki went TOKYO on business every day. So he had to wear business suit. It means "I" have to iron his shirt after the washing machine washed his shirts. Additionally this week I also stayed in Tokyo with Jan in my mother's house, and I use some street shirts, (usually I wear casual cloths), so I ironed my shirts.
Ironing is for me not usual chores, so today it is cold.
You know, we have such a phrase. Doing unusual thing causes raining.
Ironing is not "unusual" thing. I do sometimes, so today it is cold instead of raining.
And I cleaned the rooms including organizing the kitchen.
Now ---
I'm thinking today's menu of dinner, probably I will cook rice for the first time in 10 days.

Jan went back to America

I'm afraid that just only twice she wrote my diary during her staying. It's my fault. I organized her schedule too tight.

On the other hand thanks of her coming, I reaffirmed that a lot of friends are around me. And everybody is different, of course nobody is likes me. It is an usual thing that each person has a each character.
Thanks of Jan, I thanked to my friends once again.
Well, Well, out side we ate Japanese food, and inside (it means at home) I tried to serve Japanese American?? food. And thanks of her, we could also taste something Japanese American food?? for the first time. Her staying was sometimes a good excuse for us.

This is the breakfast on a day.
Can you guess what kind of "cheese" I try to use.
Usual Japanese bins of milk, Japanese cornflakes.
And my original yogurt shake with bananas and green grass powder.
And , And, I baked rhubarb pie with sower cheese, baked potatoes with natural cheese. And as an appetizer Yuki bought natural cube cheeses with MOROMI (refined soy sauce)
I think for her the most characterized person among the people she met must have been my mother. She is like---- yes, actually she is my mother.
Jan can you hear me? when you are available, pleases describe the old Japanese woman.
Well, she might be the second person. The most characterized person might have been the "ground golf " champion woman who is 80 years old.
Anyway with being them, any language doesn't work well, they speak their own language --- it's a joke.
Anyway, of course visiting foreign countries as a tourist is fun, and visiting foreign countries as a member of family is also another fun.

more adventures with Mieko

Hello again, This is Jan who is visiting Mieko and Yuki in Japan. Mieko insists it is my job to write her blog this week.
After a few days of hot weather, last night it started to rain and it is raining again today with cooler temperatures. We are going to visit a woman whom I met last visit who is a farmer. There are rice paddies all around the town and she also grows rice, among other crops.
Yesterday we toured the agricultural labs at the university where a friend is a researcher. She showed us her three-year project which involves testing degradable potting pots to see which ones produce the best plants.
Last night we went to the night club where Yuki plays jazz every month after a Japanese steak house dinner.
The visit is going fast! Jan

Jan visiting Mieko

Hello to Miekos friends...This is Jan from South Carolina visiting Mieko and Yuki. This is my second visit to their home in four years. They both came to South Carolina last spring to stay in our home so we are good friends. My last trip was as a tourist but this time I came to be a part of their family and daily life. Today Mieko and I are going to the children:s center to read English picture books to two groups of small children and then will meet some of the people I met four years ago for dinner. She is very dedicated to introducing young children to English by reading and making it fun an exciting for them. We have an interesting schedule the rest of the week, seeing how Japanese people work and live...teaching in the university, on a farm, at a pottery factory. Mieko and Yuki have bought many news items for all of us to try at meals and we are having great fun tasting new things. The weather is warm and the late spring flowers are in full bloom. It is a beautiful area and I am happy to be here. Jan

How was your Mother's Day?

In the morning, I got a call from my mother saying "Thanks for the mother's day sweets". These years, on seasonable days I send ordinal sweets at a sweet shop in KYOTO to my mother by online shopping. To tell the truth, I don't like online shopping, I like shopping through oral communication. On the other hand, on the web we can get wide-ranged information, and interesting things. I sent some Japanese cake.
This is the homepage where the ordinal Japanese cakes in April are introduced. What flowers or scenery can you image from these sweets?
Yuki called to her mother, later I'll sent something to her.
And my daughters ---.
Yesterday my elder daughter called me in a big town. I asked her to some socks , while she browsing some shops, she sent some photos of socks via her cell phone. Unfortunately they were not what I wanted. So I thanked for her attitude, and I said to her " when you find the socks I want, please buy them at that time."
And today from my younger daughter this pot of flowers arrived.
And she also called me in the afternoon. She said "I can't find what you want, so I sent this usual gift ".
At snack time (about three PM), my neighborhood came here with cake, and in the evening Yuki came back with pack of beef that was today's prize at a golf game.
Oh, I almost forgot. This early morning, my friend came with bamboo shoots.
Today, somebody called or came one after another. I was busy, so it was a really good Mother's Day.

Thank you for your comments

Though somebodies sometimes add their comments, the characters are garbled. So I'm sorry I deleted them. We can read this diary only in English.

The last half of Golden ween, it seemed to be like summer. Today it's cloudy, and a little bit cold.
In the morning I'm going to go to a nursery school to read books. After taking a rest, from 4 o'clock, my usual lesson is going to start.

And tomorrow is of course Saturday.
Have a nice day.

Golden Weeks

In Japan now we are in Golden Wees, consecutive holidays.

Usually our mothers come to stay with us, but this time, for me they are usual days. At 4 o'clock, students come and of course at 8 o'clock, junior high school students come. (My consecutive holidays of this year starts two weeks later.)

Today, Yuki is at home. So in the morning "we" are cleaning the room. But now I"m at the computer.

Why???? We cleaned the spaces where we can see, and Yuki has started to put away the hidden place, that is under his bed, while he reinstalling the previous computer.

I'm waiting for his break time. During his break, we are going to go shopping to the home center nearby.

Today it is "hot" like early summer.

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

What's this?

I bought it on the web. Can you guess what this is. Yes, it's a kind of cap, and it's a kind of bandanna. It's called a bandanna cap. It is a cap, so you don't need tie it up. and when you wear it, you look wearing a bandanna.
Why did I buy it??
Just a caprice, just a fun.
Just I wanted to cheer up me when I did house chores in the house. And the result is ---
It has been cold for these days, so I don't do house chores , I'll say more concretely, I don't clean up the rooms hard.

Toastmasters

Do you remember that I'm a member of Toastmasters club ?, though I attend to the meeting sometimes. Yesterday I attended to it. Probably three months passed since I attended to it. Usually I do something with women, or kids. This meeting is organized by mostly men. Yesterday 14 members were there, 6 businessmen, 2 ALT men (assistant language teachers, one is from England, one is from America) , and 4 office ladies, and one housewife, me.

A man brought his new gadget ... can you guess what it was. Yes it was "iPad". The scene was the same when a boy show his new NINTENTOU, or PLAYSTATION to their friends.
Additionally, he is like my younger brother, so I asked him "do you get a permission from you wife?" He said with grinning, "a person saying such a thing is only you".
Additionally again, iPad doesn't sell in Japan, he bought it in America during his business trip.

The themes of table topics were
1. Even now What would you do if you were involved in a situation with sudden flight ban and waiting for a space of plane home?
A man made a short speech. According to him, what he would need are magazines, beer, and sightseeing(if he comes there as a traveler).

2.How would you promote our Japanese pavilion of Shanghai Expo?
A man said "We displayed **** cars, ****PC".
According to the newspaper, the other day it ad a rehearsal, but unfortunately Japanese pavilions didn't catch many people. On the other hand at a Motor show in Beijing, the display of Japanese cars caught people.

3. What are you going to do this Golden week, if you have some good dating plans, please tell me. (The person who made these topics is single)
Another single man made a short speech, and he recommend him to a new multiplexed movie theater.

About the travel chaos, one of my friend was involved, and her travel to Denmark was canceled. So now she is enjoying her one week vacation at home. And if I were there, what I would thing at first is medicine.

About Shanghai Expo, no one surrounded me talk about it.

And the Golden week's dating course??? I don't have any idea.

Anyway I enjoyed the meeting.

Today's book

This year? this half of the year ? until summer? or his spring? --- any until "someday", I try to read all unprocessed books that I have to read and I want to read.

Yesterday I wrote about the book of "Bill Gates the road ahead". This book is , I think, it's really American. Compared the book -- How to be an Alien.

Do you know the book? (I hope, Tim can hear me.) Though some parts were difficult to understand including jokes, this book gave me enough image about Englishmen and Englishwomen. And this book reminded me of Sherlock Holmes ( I got his image from books I read in my childhood in Japanese)
And on some parts the image of Englishmen is smiler to stubborn but gentle Japanese men who were born before ,during or since World War.
Now it cleared up. Though it is a little bit cold, it is nice afternoon, isn't it?

Thursday, April 22, 2010

I feel itchy.

Today, it is raining and cold. Now I'm sitting in front of "my own" heater. Well, it is just a heater for a room, but my husband call it "Mieko's own heater".
I was relieved to have had the gardener trimmed the garden yesterday.

As you know, I'm in the house now. If it weren't raining I would go walking while listening to some English proglams. (Someone say " what an offensive woman.", or someone say " why don't you wear the rain coat?")

In the morning, I practiced English words, listened to some podcasts, and read some English reference for high school students who comes tonight, and read some easy English books.

One of the books I read was "Bill Gates, The Road Ahead". These days when I'm available, I'm at the computer. And I think "it's not good ". The one side of me twitter that you should return to the analog world. The other side of me also twitter that you should keep up with the current world.

Anyway Bill gates, he is one of geniuses, and he is really working hard, making efforts.

Well, Well, now I feel itchy. Yesterday I "help"ed the gardener with weeding. ( I don't know what he thought). Probably at that time I seemed to be bitten with leaves of grasses. My back of neck and shoulders itchy.

Almost the chocolate cake is done, it is an unusual thing that there is no sweets at home. So I baked chocolate cake for "myself".

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Today it was like an early summer.

Though I'm wearing a "thin" sweater, today it was really warm, like an early summer.
The students who came in the afternoon were wearing T-shirts. And the gardener who had trimmed the trees in my house since yesterday, was wearing "thin" overalls that were different from yesterday's overalls.
I hope the weather will get normal spring weather, but according to the weather forecast, it will get cold again this weekend.

Do you remember how was the weather last summer or last winter??
I remembered the last winter was really really cold than the year before last year. (or we can say the winter the year before the last year wasn't so cold than usual years)
I had forgot the weather in the last summer. But I remembered it was really humid than usual. Because I bought a new dehumidifier in my classroom.
Why I' m writing about the weather, is --- the gardener said "Why this year there are lots of worms on the trees".

Anyway he omitted lots of small worms, but probably in the rainy season, hidden worms are going to come out. So he is going to come to spray expellant in the rainy season. It will be the first time since we came here.

More than ten years have passed since I knew the gardener. At that time he was in the thirty's, and he posted his brochures into each post. Coincidentally I talked with him when he was posting, and I was asked to trim our trees at really low price, and he comes to my house once a year at the same price. Now he incorporates his business, he has some employees, and he constantly undertakes some public works.

Well, Well, students in the next lesson comes. Talk to you later.

Monday, April 19, 2010

Probably I can get e-mails

Good morning.
These days we can't get private e-mails well. Probably now we can.
If someone sent us e-mails, for these days, please send them again.

Well, the weather in "Japan" is terrible. On last Friday we had snowy rain, or snow. Actually when we got up Saturday morning, the roofs and gardens were lightly coated with snow.
But yesterday, and the day before yesterday, they were warm, actaully it was spring.

Today, it is sunny and seems to be warm. Tomorrow??? I don't know.
Anyway this week has started.

The list that I have to do is ...

Ask to deliver kerosene
Ask to order our favorite coffee beans
make lots for my classes
make a monthly newsletter for my students' parents
make a small test for my students

go "walking" to a groceries store nearby and a bank that is a little bit far
---- on my schedule, I'm going to go walking, but -- I may go there by car.

For a while, I am at this PC.

Cherry blossoms and a special bacteria??

This morning Yuki and I went to see cherry blossoms near the mound, for me it's a mountain, though.

This weekend it will be the best days to see cherry blossoms in Utsunomiya. According to the weather reports, it will rain tomorrow. I hope its forecast would be wrong (as usual).
Since we came here, we always go to see cherry blossoms in spring. On the first few years we used to come here with our friends and have party. And until two years ago we came here with our family. And from last year, two of us come.
Anyway I'm glad to see these cherry blossoms here again in this spring.
Well, I read and listen to an interested news on the BBC cite. Probably this news is not announced widely in Japan. Do you know that Japanese people have a special bacteria in our guts, which are called Bacteroides plebeius.
According to the BBC World News for Children site,
" Scientists claim that Japanese people have a natural advantage when it comes to eating sushi. That's because bacteria in their guts have learned to copy what bacteria in the sea does - and that's to break down seaweed. In the bite-size pieces of rice, fish, vegetables and egg, seaweed is wrapped around the food to keep it together. "
What I can say is just "Really?".

Pollen doesn't circulate so much this year????

For me today it is not so "warm" , it is April though. But everyboday say it seems to be cold this April. I don't know , but it is the reason why this year I don't suffer a bad pollen allergy fortunately or unfortunately.

So blooming of cherry brossomes could cerebrate entrance ceremonies of schools. This weekend it will be the best to appreciate cherry brossomes in Utsunimoya."If" it isn't rain, and it isn't cold (for me) , we will go to see cherry brossomes near the small mound.

In my garden , which it is in a shaded area, some flowers finaly started to open, narcissuses, muscaris, etc.

But tulips that I planted from the bulbs, .... OH, I'm sorry, I dropped big boxes on them, so they were broken.

April has started

Every morning on the news we hear that "Today cherry blossoms started to bloom in ****". Unfortunately here in Utsunomiya they don't yet. Probably this weekend.
Anyway April has started. Today it is raining and very cold like winter.

Our elder daughter started to work at the art school where she graduated this March. She works there 4 days in a week, from 9 to 6 or 8. Though she is hired as a part time worker, the work is the same as the full time work. The big difference is an insurance system. It can't be helped.
And May she is going to go to another art school as a student once a week.

Younger daughter became a third grade student in a women's university. On the other hand she worked a part time jog at an architectural firm two days in a week.

My husband works as usual. Now in Japan we are in a big economic recession, so fortunately or unfortunately he can (has to) come back at around 10, not at midnight.

Me, --- the number of students decreased a little bit, but my schedule is not changed. In the morning twice a week I do volunteer to read English picture books at nursery schools. And about 4 o'clock, my lessons start every day. And every night from 8 to 10 junior high school students or high school students come. I don't have many students, and the room is not big. So my classes are like tutorial classes.
And probably once a month I go to a child's center and a public library to read English picture books. Additionally I go to KARAKU to play the piano once a month.

Yesterday Yuki and I went to TOKYO to listen to a KARAOKE recital. My mother-in-law sang there. She is now 84 years old, but she doesn't seem old at the place ----- many many many--- elder people in wonderful dress for the recital was enjoying there. And many family came to "see" them like us. The recital was supported by Suginami award as a project, so it was a kind of public concert. The theme of the project is making a bright ( lively?) society (for elder people).

These days our government seems to focus on children service more than elder people's. And everybody knows that it is necessary to bolster at nursing service to weakened elder people. On the other hand it is really important to get places for fine elder people to do something in public. So this project is really good, I think.

I'm happy to see that everybody enjoys their life, they are grumbling sometimes though.
And the person who is grumbling the most is ---me. What should I do?????

Finally?

Finally --- I want to tell you two things.
The first thing is that, just , my new fiscal year has started. in 20 minutes two girls are going to come.
And the second thing is, that my daughter came back here until tomorrow and we were waiting a phone calling, and finally we got a call from the art university where she graduated about a week ago. She got a part time job there as an assistant. So she could get a toehold in the art industry.

If she didn't get the job, her main job would be a waitress at a restaurant. Now he main job is an assistant, it is a part time job though.
